History is full of cautionary tales. Remember the hiring tool that discriminated against women or the healthcare algorithm that showed bias against minorities? These are not isolated incidents; they are lessons in the real-world consequences of not having a robust ethical framework in place. They are a powerful reminder that an ethical failure is a business failure.
A major tech company developed an AI-powered hiring tool to streamline their recruitment process. However, the tool was trained on a decade of hiring data, which was heavily skewed towards men. As a result, the tool began to penalize resumes that included the word “women’s” and downgraded candidates from all-female colleges, effectively discriminating against women. The company had to scrap the tool entirely, a costly lesson in the importance of fair training data.
An AI algorithm designed to manage patient care and resources was found to be less effective for Black patients. The system was trained on historical healthcare costs, which were lower for Black patients due to long-standing disparities in access to care. The algorithm misinterpreted this data, concluding that Black patients needed less care. This example illustrates how historical biases can be cemented into AI systems, leading to real-world harm.
The inspiration for this e-book came from an unexpected place, my selection to be part of a citizens’ jury on AI in healthcare in Ireland. It was a fascinating and eye-opening experience that went beyond the headlines and into the core ethical dilemmas of a rapidly evolving technology.
We were tasked with grappling with big questions: How do we balance innovation with patient safety? Who is responsible when an AI makes a mistake? How do we ensure that AI serves humanity, not the other way around?
This process made me realize how crucial it is to get AI governance right. It’s not just about corporate policy; it’s about protecting people. My time on the jury showed me that businesses have a profound responsibility to understand and protect their customers, their employees, and their own long-term viability by putting in place robust ethical and governance frameworks.
